Design and Construction Team

Design and Construction oversees the planning, design, construction and occupancy of all construction projects across the University.  The department has two offices located at our Coral Gables and Medical campuses.  Our team consists of architects, engineers and construction professionals with years of experience in the industry.

Judith Abrams is responsible for construction projects as well as interior design on the Medical campus. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Florida State University and has over 16 years’ experience. Judith has been a member of American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) since 2003

Orlando Bomnin
Sr. Project Manager

Orlando Bomnin received his degree from the New Jersey School of Architecture (NJIT) for Bachelor of Art in Architecture and has been practicing for over 35 years. He is also a registered architect in the state of Florida.

David M. Shewairy is responsible for construction projects on the Coral Gables and Rosenstiel campuses.  He received his degree from Florida International University for a Master of Architecture and has been practicing for over 20 years.  David holds an NCARB record and is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects.

Manager of Interiors

Rosina Villavicencio is responsible for the Management of the Interior Design team on all campuses.  She received her degree from the Miami Dade College, for Interior Design and has been practicing for over 16 years.  Rosina is a LEED accredited and IIDA.

Assistant Vice President

Edward L. Hengtgen is the Assistant Vice President for Design & Construction. He is responsible for the oversight of major and minor healthcare renovation and construction projects on the Medical campus.  He received his degree Bachelor of Architecture from Florida A & M University and has been practicing as a registered architect for 29 years.  Edward is a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

Christopher Blair is a Senior Project Manager for Design & Construction. He is responsible for construction project on the Coral Gables and Medical campuses. He received his Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Florida and has been practicing for over 11 years.  Christopher is licensed architect and maintains a LEED BD+C accreditation.

Max Bunster is a project manager for Design & Construction. He is responsible for construction projects on all university campuses. He received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame and also from Universidad Católica de Chile. He has been practicing for over 42 years.  Max has NCARB membership and is a LEED Green Associate.

Juan Rodriguez-Vela is responsible for coordinating, developing and oversees preliminary site development,architectural studies/analysis, programming for new buildings and renovations; oversees interior design, space planning, exterior graphics. Juan received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Miami and has been practicing for 25 years. He is a member of National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

He is currently responsible for approximately $50M of non-capital projects in various stages and has over 40 years experience.
